About Us

Every chemist dreams of seeing molecules. Frankenstein Bio Reagents began around 2002 in Cambridge (MA) when Vlado Gelev, a chemist among biophysicists, started supplying his friends with 13C-methyl amino acid precursors. These compounds allowed cleaner observation of the motions and interactions of large proteins by nuclear magnetic resonance. The company was registered as a DBA in 2009 and expanded into the manufacture of high purity deuterated detergents and lipids for the study of membrane proteins. In 2014 the company relocated to Dr. Gelev's hometown of Sofia, Bulgaria, where he was offered a faculty position at Sofia University Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. The company employs the expertise of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty, while continuing to collaborate internationally. In 2019 we were proud to be part of a multidisciplinary team reporting the utility of aromatic 13C-19F pairs to produce remarkably sharp NMR signals. In 2021 our team reported the use of "locally deuterated" and methyl-13C leucine in cell-free and insect cell culture.
