Deuterated lipids are used in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), Raman spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry studies of membranes and membrane proteins. For example, deuteration of the alkyl chains of phospholipids produces a flat baseline in the aliphatic region of the NMR spectra of membrane-bound proteins, which significantly improves the quality of methyl-methyl sidechain distance measurements. Selective deuteration of various parts of lipid molecules enables studies of the dynamic properties of membranes by SANS. Deuterated fatty acids can enhance the Raman resolution in studies of the cell lipidome. In metabolic studies of lipid nanoparticles, deuteration provides a unique signature that can help with tracing the lipid components by mass spectrometry. A list of research articles using FB Reagents products can be found here.
In addition to the deuterated lipids listed below, we offer custom deuterium configurations, and many lipids with 13C-labeled, 15N-labeled, spin-labeled, fluorinated, click-reactive, cysteine-reactive, oxidized, and other unusual alkyl chains and polar heads.

Detergents
The largest selection of deuterated detergents of high purity, including medium-chain phospholipids, lyso-lipids, alkyl glycosides, N-oxides, and monoglycerides. Deuterated detergents are used primarily as membrane mimetics in the NMR studies of membrane proteins, an application that demands the highest quality. Our perdeuterated LDAO was the first deuterated detergent used to determine the NMR structure of an integral membrane protein. Drop us a line if you can’t find what you’re looking for. In addition to the detergents in the list below, we offer custom synthesis of every conceivable labeled or unlabeled detergent. Please inquire about our third-party detergent purification service.

FBReagents started over 20 years ago as a supplier of 13C-methyl precursors for “ILV” protein labeling. Recently, we pioneered the use of “locally deuterated” 13C-methyl amino acids, and were part of the team that introduced the first 13C-19F amino acids.

About Us
Frankenstein Bio Reagents
Every chemist dreams of seeing molecules. Frankenstein Bio Reagents began around 2002 in Cambridge (MA) when Vlado Gelev, a chemist among biophysicists, started supplying his friends with 13C-methyl amino acid precursors. These compounds allowed cleaner observation of the motions and interactions of large proteins by nuclear magnetic resonance. The company was registered as a DBA in 2009 and expanded into the manufacture of high purity deuterated detergents and lipids for the study of membrane proteins. In 2014 the company relocated to Dr. Gelev’s hometown of Sofia, Bulgaria, where he was offered a faculty position at Sofia University Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. The company employs the expertise of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty, while continuing to collaborate internationally. In 2019 we were proud to be part of a multidisciplinary team reporting the utility of aromatic 13C-19F pairs to produce remarkably sharp NMR signals. In 2021 our team reported the use of “locally deuterated” and methyl-13C leucine in cell-free and insect cell culture.
